This book presents an in-depth discussion of the role of the clinician’s subjective experience in the psychiatric evaluation, and gathers contributions from several different disciplines, e.g. phenomenology, the cognitive sciences, and psychoanalysis. It also presents recent, original research findings on a new, validated instrument for assessing the clinician’s subjective experience, which may have important clinical and research implications. In turn, the potential of a new approach to the description and measurement of subjective and intersubjective clinical phenomena is critically examined.

Today, mental health clinicians and researchers mainly rely on diagnostic classification systems based on objectified and supposedly reliable operational criteria. It is common knowledge, however, that in everyday practice many clinicians also base the assessment on their own feelings or intuitions about the patient. For an even greater number of clinicians, this process may occur without their knowledge. Phenomenology and the cognitive sciences have addressed the reflective and pre-reflective aspects of the clinical knowing process, and have provided theoretical accounts of the complex relationship between psychopathology, clinical reasoning, and the intersubjective field. Contributions to this subject have also been made by psychoanalysis and other psychotherapeutic approaches, which have focused on the role of the therapist’s feelings in the psychotherapeutic process. Therefore, scholars from various fields are increasingly stressing the importance of complementing the predominant objectivist paradigm of mental illness and diagnosis with thoughtful attention to the subjective and intersubjective elements involved in a thorough psychopathological evaluation.

Given its subject matter, the book will appeal to a broad readership, from psychiatrists and psychologists to psychotherapists, analysts, and researchers in these and related fields.
