The book is a collaboration of ideas and experiences from over 150 dedicated and brilliant neurosurgeons around the world. Regardless of the geographical context, the common goal of the neurosurgeons writing this book was to provide data to better understand the field and, by so doing, to better serve patients. Scientific curiosity, deep dedication, incredible work ethics, entrepreneurship and creativity were common traits among neurosurgeons around the world, and not the exception. The text allows the reader to see the field of neurosurgery thought the lenses of authors spanning five continents. In doing so, the book serves to provide multiple perspectives and build a foundation for future collaboration in the field of neurosurgery. The first two chapters highlights the role of neurosurgery in worldwide health care and its history.
The many areas pioneered and developed by neurosurgeons are extraordinary. The overarching theme over the year was to develop new, more effective high-end solutions for complex diseases and to provide access to neurosurgical services for all patients. Yet, disparities across the globe still exist and strategies and opportunities to overcome them are reviewed. The remainder 22 chapters are divided into 3 parts. Part I, focuses on the current state and future directions of each of the neurosurgical subspecialties in the five continents. Part II, discusses neurosurgery education around the world. Specifically, it highlights the differences and similarities of neurosurgical education and training around the world, including new educational tools and paradigms to reduce inequality and increase access to neurosurgical education. This part aims to provide a sense of the accomplishments and challenges to the education of the next generation of neurosurgeons in different regions of the world. Finally, part III focuses on analyzing a few aspects of economics that influence neurosurgery globally. Economics is the study of how humans make decisions in the face of scarcity. The book provides theories, models, and tools helpful to apply when planning to allocate resources, not just financial, but also human and intellectual. Economics does not provide the answer to the problem; rather it provides the tools to find an answer, or, ideally, multiple possible solutions.
